Interstate Impacts

Cedar Street Bridge over I - 95 in Norwalk will be opened to traffic, and Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue Bridges over I - 95 in Norwalk will be closed for construction. 

 

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the opening of the Cedar Street and the closing of both Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue overpasses in Norwalk for the I-95 Interchange 14 (Route 1) and 15 (Route 7) reconstruction to add auxiliary lanes on the Interstate 95.

 

Cedar Street over I-95 in Norwalk over I-95 will be Open to the Public.

Cedar Street will be open to the public between Summit Avenue and Route 1 on or about November 11, 2013, weather permitting.

 

Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue over I - 95 in Norwalk will be in Closed for construction.

The Project will proceed with the next phase by closing both Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue bridges over I-95.  

 

LANE CLOSURES INFO- The project is being constructed in stages and work on the Interstate will be limited to night time operations.

October 2, 2013

Two-thirds of the concrete deck has been placed on the Cedar Street Bridge. The remainder of the deck will be completed early this month. Storm drainage, utility, and sewer works continues along Route 1.  In addition, two earth retaining wall have also been completed this month along Route 1.  Within the next month sidewalk, parapet walls, and protective fencing are scheduled to be installed on the Cedar Street Bridge with final bridge pavement.  The opening of the Cedar Street Bridge remains on track for the end of November or early December of this year.



September 4, 2013

Construction activities such as bridge work, surveying, and drainage work take place on a daily basis during the week within our work zone behind precast concrete barriers which require no lane closures.  Periodic lane closures will occur at night on NB & SB I-95, and during the day on Route 1.

Currently we are engaged in daily single lane closure of Connecticut Avenue (Route 1) in various locations from Fairfield Avenue to Scribner Avenue.  There is are no lane closures scheduled for I-95 at this time. 

Work at night on I-95 will resume soon.  Typically Northbound I-95 lane closures will take place from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am Monday thru Wednesday, 10:00 pm to 6:00 am Thursday night into Friday morning, and , Southbound I-95 lane closures will take place from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am Monday thru Thursday, 10:00 pm to 7:00 am.  No weekend work is scheduled at this time. 

 As we move to night work, or install detours, we will update this page accordingly.

Southbound Exit 14 Off ramp Construction

Work has progressed on the shoulders of the southbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp and the project is ready to rebuild the main portion of the ramp.  Starting on or about July 8th, 2013, traffic will be shifted on the ramp to allow the construction crews access to half of the ramp for reconstruction of the pavement.  There will be no reduction in lanes during construction.  After this phase is complete near the end of July, there will be another shift to tie the construction phases together, and the ramp is expected to be opened to it new configuration with 3 lanes and an extended deceleration lane sometime in  August. 



June 4, 2013

This month, work on the widening and paving on the Exit 14 southbound off-ramp should start.  When this work is complete there will be three lanes.  Currently there are two.  The final configuration will have two left turns lane and one right turn lane and an and longer deceleration lane on the highway to avoid backup from the light reaching the highway travel lanes.  When this work takes place, it will be two lanes will be maintained during the day with minimal  disruption to traffic.  There may be night closure which will be announced. 

 

The drainage improvement and sidewalk work on Connecticut Avenue (Rt. 1) between Exit 14 and Fairfield Avenue have begun.  There will be regular single lane closures on Connecticut Avenue between Exit 14 and Fairfield from 9:00 am till 3:00 pm.

 

Work is continuing on the excavation and demolition of the east side of the Cedar Street Bridge (Phase II).  The work is done in phases to maintain the utilities that cross the bridge.  There will be no lane closure on I-95 during the day and some night lane closure to support the work for a couple of weeks at a time.  Currently the project expect to complete and reopen the Cedar Street bridge by the end of the 2013.

 

When the Cedar Street bridge is reopened, work will begin on Fairfield Avenue and Taylor Avenue.  Both bridges will be closed, and there will be detours posted.  Cedar Street will be the primary alternate route.  Taylor Avenue is expected to take 9 months (September of 2014), and Fairfield one year (January 2015). 

 

As part of the drainage improvements, a water quality and retention pond is under construction in the infield of the West Avenue on ramp to SB I-95.  The work is nearly complete.  To connect this pond to the drainage system for I-95, a pipe is being ‘jacked’ under West Avenue.  Hydraulic rams are pushing a 48” pipe under West Avenue to connect  the water quality pond to the trunk of the drainage system.

December 27, 2013 Update


The demolition of the Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue bridges continues. All work is on hold for the holidays and will resume on or about January 6th.  From that point we anticipate approximately 2-3 more weeks of demolition.    

 

Only minor work on Route 1 is planned for January, while drainage work continues throughout the project.

Connecticut Department of Transportation Press Release  (11/14/2013)

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the start of the first phase of demolition for the Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue bridges in Norwalk is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 18, 2013.

 

The work is part of a project to construct continuous auxiliary lanes (referred to as speed change lanes) between Interchange 14 (Route 1) and Interchange 15 (Route 7) and improvements to Route 1 in Norwalk.  Additional infrastructure improvements include the replacement of three overpass bridges (Fairfield Avenue, Cedar Street, and Taylor Avenue) that carry local streets over 1-95 and improvements to drainage facilities, pedestrian and traffic operations including the addition of seven-foot wide sidewalks along both sides of Route U.S. 1.

 

The City of Norwalk is currently reconstructing Cedar Street from Fairfield Avenue to Elmwood Avenue.

 

Special Advisory-

The first stage of demolition for the Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue bridges is scheduled to begin Monday night, November 18th and will continue nightly between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday until mid-December, weather permitting.  

 

Daytime construction activities will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. 

 

Detour Info -

Taylor Avenue is closed between Church Street and Route 1, and Fairfield Avenue between Reed Street and Route 1 until the Spring of 2015. 

 

January 20, 2014 Update

 

The demolition of the Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue Bridge Decks are complete. The remaining steel will be removed the week of January 20th, and the demolition of the center piers will be finished in early February, weather permitting.   

 

Only minor work on Route 1 is planned for January and February, while drainage work continues throughout the project.

 

We have received inquiries about the noise at night.  Due to the fact that lanes cannot be closed on I-95 during the day, heavy construction over the highway can only be done at night. 

 

With the removal of the concrete bridge decks, the amount of noise caused by the construction is expected to be reduced.  The demolition of the concrete center piers remains and will take place over the next few weeks.  The type of work associated with the pier removal is different than the work that took place in early January and smaller amounts of noise are expected.  This work is scheduled to take place Sunday night through Friday night, weather permitting.  Nighttime construction activities will occur between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. 

 

The daytime construction activities will continue between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

January 27, 2014 Update

 

Due to the extreme weather, work on the removal of the bridges over I-95 at night has been postponed.  Please be advised that demolition activities at night are expected to resume February 3, 2014 and continue for 2 weeks, weather permitting.

February 3, 2014 Update

 

The demolition of the concrete support structures for Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue bridges will continue in February. This work will take place during the day and night shifts. 

 

The night demolition is scheduled to resume this week, but has already been cancelled for today, February 3rd, and tomorrow, February 4th due to weather.  It is likely that the work will pushed back further due to the weather forecast. 

 

Only minor work on Route 1 is planned for February, while drainage work continues throughout the project.

February 10, 2014 Update


Due to the weather, the night demolition of the concrete piers in the I-95 median has been on hold for the past 2 weeks.  This work will resume tonight.  It is estimated that the work will finish near the end of the month or first week in March, weather permitting.  


Work on the new abutments for Fairfield Avenue have been progressing during the day.

March 6, 2014 Update


The demolition of Taylor Avenue Bridge and Phase 1 of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge is complete; and the foundation work at both locations has begun.  This work will continue during the day and night shifts between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.   As the weather breaks, there will be more activities in these areas.  

 

Drainage work along I-95 southbound near Exit 15 (Route 7) has  resumed.  This work will continue behind the construction barrier and will have no impact on traffic.


The blasting that took place this week is complete.  There is no further blasting planned for the next couple of weeks.

 

Only minor work is taking place on Route 1 but the resumption of drainage and sewer improvements will start later in the month (weather permitting).


February 19, 2014 Update


As part of the excavation for the new bridge foundations, rock removal, including blasting, will resume on or about March 4th between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, weather permitting.  We would recommend motorists avoid the area during the blasting periods and be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.

 

What to Expect:

Interstate Impacts: 

  1. During blasting operations, traffic on I-95 in both directions will be halted for 5 to 10 minute intervals two or three times between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. 

 

Local Road Impacts:

  1. Prior to the scheduled blast, all traffic will be halted along Cedar Street and Stuart Avenue, Summit Avenue for 5 to 10 minutes.

 

Potential Vibration and Noise Construction Activities:

  1. A warning siren will sound prior to each blast.   A second warning siren will signal the all clear.

  2. Vibration and noise will be monitored on site during the blasting activities.

Preparations for drainage along the Route 7 on ramp are underway, and a barrier for the highway are being set in place.  This work takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades and will not impact traffic.

 

Preliminary work is taking place on Route 1 but the resumption of drainage and sewer improvements will start in April (weather permitting).

April 7, 2014 Update


Starting April 21, the Route 7 South Exit 1 Ramp to I-95 South will be closed nightly Monday – Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (weather permitting).  This work is schedule run for approximately two weeks and finish on May 3.  Traffic will be detoured onto the West Avenue (South Norwalk) exit and re-enter I-95 southbound at the West Avenue on ramp.

 

The Route 7 southbound Exit ramp closure is required to allow for installation of drainage improvements along and across the ramp.  The work is part of a project to construct continuous auxiliary lanes between Interchange 14 and Interchange 15 and improvements to Route 1 in Norwalk.

May 28, 2014 Update


Southbound I-95 Exit 14 Off Ramp Traffic Shift Scheduled June 9th

 

The Project is prepared for a traffic shift involving installation of new pavement markings and shifting of temporary concrete barriers on the southbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp in Norwalk on June 9th.  The shift will allow construction crews to complete the widening of the exit ramp.  This project will improve the lane width and merge distance on I-95 at Exits 14 & 15 as well as improve the drainage in the area.  This work involves the widening of the southbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp. Work on the ramp will take place weekdays and nights from Tuesday May 27th to Monday June 9th behind barrier.  The southbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp traffic will be halted intermittently for not more than 10 minutes at a time for the traffic shift on June 9th.

April 30, 2014 Update

The Taylor Avenue Bridge and Phase 1 of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge foundation and pier work has progress at both locations and steel is ready to be erected at Fairfield Avenue.  Steel erection will take place northbound and southbound from May 1st to May 6th

 

Note:  During the regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures on May 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th, I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 (U.S. Route 7) will be stopped for a period not to exceed 10 minutes to raise the steel (no Saturday night or Sunday night closures).

 

Drainage along the Route 7 on ramp at Exit 15 southbound is continuing.  During the day, this work will continue to takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades.  At night, the full closures of the ramp will be extended till May 11 due to the weather this week.  The closures will be Monday – Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (weather permitting).  Traffic will be detoured onto the West Avenue (South Norwalk) exit and re-enter I-95 southbound at the West Avenue on ramp.

May 9, 2014 Update


The Taylor Avenue Bridge foundation and pier work continues to  progress and steel has been erected at Fairfield Avenue for Phase 1.  Over the next month, utility work on the bridge will continue. Work for both bridges will continue during the day and night shifts between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.   Lane closures in the northbound and southbound of I-95 direction will continue nightly, Monday through Friday, 9:00pm till 6:00 am, to facilitate the work.   There will be no lane closures over the Memorial Day weekend.

 

Drainage along the Route 7 on ramp at Exit 15 southbound is continuing.  During the day, this work will continue to takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades. 

June 5, 2014 Update


Blasting to Resume June 10.

 

The Contractor will resume rock blasting for the I-95 project in Norwalk on or about June 10th between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, weather permitting along both the northbound and southbound sides of I-95 between Taylor Avenue and Route 7. We would recommend motorists avoid the area during the blasting periods and be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.

August 5, 2014 Update


There has been a great deal of progress this past month.  The Taylor Avenue Bridge foundations and center pier have been completed.  The steel has been set and the formation of the bridge deck is underway.  Roadway widening in both directions of I-95 continues with the placement and rolling of the roadway base and the placement of concrete barriers.  The Route 7 on ramp to I-95 has been widened and paved in preparation for a traffic shift to install a new cross-drain under the southbound lanes of I-95.   Minor widening continues on the other ramps in the area.

 

Phase I of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge has been completed, with the eastern half of the bridge foundations, center pier, steel and deck forms all complete.  Prior to the next phase of work, existing telecommunication lines across I-95 will be suspended in place using a temporary bridge currently under construction.   A 60 inch drainage trunk line is in progress along the southbound side of I-95.

 

Drainage, sanitary, and utility work continues along Route 1 as well as minor roadway widening, curbing and sidewalk installation along the south side between Cedar Street and the Exit 14 ramps.

 

New upcoming work includes the subsurface jacking of drainage pipe beneath I-95 SB, reinforcement for the Taylor Avenue bridge deck, base paving of the I-95 NB shoulder and auxiliary lane and various ramps.  The traffic shift for the SB Exit 14 has been pushed back to allow for the completion of an additional section of the SB auxiliary lane and shoulder.  This will allow for additional storage capacity on the ramp during final construction.   This shift is expected to take place within the next month.

 

Periodic night time lane closures will continue as work resumes at the Fairfield Avenue Bridge, drainage work continues along I-95 and for paving operations.

 

August 29, 2014 Update


The project placed the bridge deck concrete for Taylor Avenue Bridge and work has begun on the sidewalks and parapets.  The approaches to the bridge will begin in September.  Phase 2 of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge is progressing as the project prepares to support the utilities.  Drainage along I-95 southbound is continuing.  This work takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades. 

October 28, 2014 Update

 

The project has completed all work on Taylor Avenue and will open to traffic pending final line striping and inspection.   Work along the west side of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge continues with completion of the bridge foundation and simultaneous construction of both abutments and the center median pier.  Drainage along I-95 southbound is continuing, including the tunneling of a new trunk line across the I-95 southbound lanes.  Work on the widened shoulders for I-95 is ongoing, and will continue through the next month.  This work takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades. 

 

Starting on or about November 3, 2013, the I-95 Northbound Exit 14 on ramp in Norwalk will be closed weeknights from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am for two weeks weather permitting, to allow the construction crews access to the ramp for reconstruction of the pavement.  The traveling public will be detoured to U.S. Route 1 where they will be directed northbound to West Street via Stuart Avenue back on to I-95.

The project is continuing the approach work on the Taylor Avenue Bridge as well as the on the sidewalks and parapets.   The demolition of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge resumes this month which will include potential vibrations and noise due to the construction activities.  Drainage along I-95 southbound is continuing.  This work takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades.

November 7, 2014 Update

 

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will reopen the reconstruction of the Taylor Avenue Bridge in Norwalk for the I-95 Interchange 14 and 15 reconstruction project November 11, 2014. 

 

The project has completed the approach work, and is finalizing the final touches on the Taylor Avenue Bridge as well as the on the sidewalks and parapets.   It will be opened to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Tuesday November 11. 

 

Work will continue on the reconstruction Fairfield Avenue Bridge including the concrete abutment and structural steel work this month.  The Fairfield Avenue bridge is still on track to be opened in the spring.

 

Work is progressing on the widening of I-95.  Work will continue on the shoulder between Exit 14 and Fairfield Avenue in the northbound and southbound directions.  In addition, reconstruction of both the Exit 14 northbound on-ramp at Scribner Avenue, and Exit 14 southbound off-ramp to Route 1 are progressing and should be completed by December, weather permitting.  Regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures on I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 (U.S. Route 7) will continue to support the bridge and highway work. Lane closures in the northbound and southbound will take place nightly, Monday through Friday, 9:00pm till 6:00am. 

 

On Route 1, work will continue on the drainage and sanitary sewer.  The project plans to mill and pave Route 1 between the Exit 14 intersection and Fairfield Avenue to improve the pavement before the winter.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the project on Route 1 weekdays between 9:00am and 3:00pm, and at night between 8:00pm and 5:00am.

November 14, 2014 Update

 

Nighttime Traffic Stoppages Scheduled for Interstate 95 Between Exits 14 and 15 To Install New Steel for Bridges November 18-20

 

The Project is announcing that traffic traveling I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 (U.S. Route 7) will be stopped for a period not to exceed 10 minutes for erection of the structural steel.  The work is scheduled to occur between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18; Wednesday, November 19; and Thursday November 20 if necessary, weather permitting.  This work involves the installation of new structural steel for Fairfield Avenue.

 

Traffic Stoppages Scheduled Between the Hours of 11p.m. and 5a.m.

 

Steel erection will take place northbound and southbound from November 18th to November 20th.  During the regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures, I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 (U.S. Route 7) will be stopped for a period not to exceed 10 minutes.

 

Regular Lane Closure Hours for I-95 are as follows:

November 17, 2014 Update

 

Paving Work on Route 1 November 18-21

 

The Project is planning to pave sections of U.S. Route 1 to accommodate a future lane shift to allow for the next phase of work along Route 1.  Milling and Paving will take place on U.S. Route 1 between Exit 14 and Cedar Street in Norwalk between November 18th and 21st, 2014.


Motorist may experience delays due to rough road surface and temporary lane closures during this period.

November 25, 2014 Update

 

The project has completed the winter paving maintenance and sewer work on Route 1 this past month.  Since the pavement maintenance work is completed, there is a traffic shift planned for Route 1 in December to facilitate drainage and sidewalk work on the north shoulder.


At Fairfield Avenue, the structure is progressing well.  The project raised steel last week and the abutment walls are nearly complete.  Over the next month work will take place on backfilling the slope, and preparations for the utility installation.


Along I-95, the project is continuing to work on the drainage, installation of permanent protective barrier, and slope shaping.  Work on the widened shoulders for I-95 is ongoing, and will continue through the next month.  This work takes place off the highway behind the construction barricades.

There will be no lane closures on I-95 over the Holiday weekend related to this project (November 24 – November  30).


Work will resume at night on I-95 starting December 1, 2014.  Regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures on I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 (U.S. Route 7) will continue to support the bridge and highway work. Lane closures in the northbound and southbound will take place nightly, Monday through Friday, 9:00pm till 6:00am.

December 12, 2014 Update

 

New Northbound I-95 Lane between Exits 14 and 15 December 18, 2014

The Project will be opening an additional lane on I-95 between the Exit 14 on ramp and the Exit 15 off ramp in Norwalk on Thursday December 18, (weather permitting).

 

The new traffic pattern will provide a full lane for motorist to travel between the Exit 14 ramp and Exit 15 ramp to merge on and off the highway.   This should relieve some of the traffic delays on northbound I-95 traveling through Norwalk.  Construction will continue on the northbound shoulders through the spring while traffic will continue to travel on the newly opened lane.

 

Traffic Shift Rescheduled for Route 1 due to weather for December 16, 2014.

 

Due to the weather, the traffic shift planned for Route 1 between the Exit 14 ramp and the Fairfield Avenue has been rescheduled for December 16th, 2014. December 19, 2014 Update

 

The project has completed opening of the auxiliary lane on northbound I-95 between Exits 14 and 15, and the Exit 14 southbound ramp has been widened to accommodate 3 lane entering Route 1. The new traffic patterns should relieve some of the traffic delays on northbound and southbound I-95 traveling through Norwalk.  As construction work continues on the northbound shoulders through the spring, the newly opened lane will remain open to traffic.

 

There will be no lane closures on I-95 related to the project over the holidays (December 20 – January 4, 2015).

January 6, 2015 Update


In January, work will continue to progress along the shoulders of I-95 between Route 7 and Fairfield Avenue.  Work will also continue near the southbound Route 7 onramp to restore the area after the drainage is complete.  All this work will be done behind barriers and there will be no lane closure on I-95 related to this work.

February 5, 2015 Update

April 15, 2015 Update


Now that the weather has broken, the project progress had picked up.  The concrete decks on the Fairfield Avenue Bridge have been placed and work is continuing on the sidewalks and parapets.  In the upcoming weeks the project will work on the  approaches work, sidewalks and paving Fairfield Avenue over I-95.  The expected opening should by the end of June.


The Project is also progressing on the widening of southbound I-95.  After the brutal winter, the project has restriped the ramps and address maintenance on the existing pavement.  Shoulder work behind barriers will continue this month and paving should begin by May, but it is temperature dependent.   The restoration of the southbound exit 15 onramp from Route 7 will begin soon.  When the pavement work is complete and the ramp is restored, the operational lane will be opened.  This should be ready before the summer.


On Route 1, work will continue on the drainage.  Now that the lanes have been shifted the focus of the work will be on the north side of Route 1 between Fairfield Avenue and the Exit 14 intersection.  Work is beginning at the Fairfield Avenue intersection and will move through the project in the upcoming months.   Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the project on Route 1 weekdays between 9:00am and 3:00pm.  This work will continue through the summer.

May 4, 2015 Update


In the upcoming weeks, the Project is finalizing the work to the bridge deck and approaches along with the sidewalks and parapets for the Fairfield Avenue Bridge.  We are currently still on track to open the bridge to traffic by the end of June 2015.


The Project is also progressing on the widening of southbound I-95.  Shoulder work behind barriers will continue this month and paving should begin by the end of May.  The restoration of the Southbound I-95  Exit 15 onramp from Route 7 has begun and the should be complete by the end of June.


On Route 1, work is continuing to install drainage culverts.  Work is ongoing at the Fairfield Avenue intersection and progressing through the Ferris Avenue and Glenwood Avenue intersections.  There is also drainage work near the Exit 14 intersection on Route 1.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the Project on Route 1 weekdays between 9:00am and 3:00pm.  All the various construction operations on Route 1 will continue right through to the end of the Summer and Project completion.

May 11, 2015 Update


The project is announcing a detour for westbound Reed Street from Stuart Avenue to Fairfield Avenue


As part of the reconstruction work for the Fairfield Avenue bridge, the intersection of Fairfield Avenue and Reed Street at the end of the I-95 Exit 14 northbound off ramp will be reconstructed requiring a detour.  Eastbound Reed Street traffic from the I-95 Northbound Exit 14 off-ramp intersection will be allowed access to Reed Street in during the detour in a single lane configuration, but Westbound traffic from Stuart Avenue will be detoured to Fairfield Avenue. 


This detour will be in place daily, Monday through Friday, beginning May 18, 2015 from 9:00am till 3:00 pm.  It will be in place for two weeks, weather permitting and excluding the holiday weekend.

The Reed Street Detour from Stuart Avenue to Fairfield Avenue is Rescheduled for May 27th.


Due to scheduling concerns, the detour originally planned for May 18th at Reed Street will be rescheduled for May 27th, 2015, conditions permitting.


Eastbound Reed Street traffic from the I-95 Northbound Exit 14 off-ramp intersection will be allowed access to Reed Street during the detour in a single lane configuration, but Westbound traffic from Stuart Avenue will be detoured to Fairfield Avenue.   This detour will be in place daily weekdays, beginning Wednesday, from 9:00am till 3:00 pm.  It will be active for one week, weather permitting.

June 2, 2015 Update


The project is continuing to make significant strides to complete the Fairfield Avenue Bridge.   The sidewalks and parapets are complete and work on the approaches has begun.  We are currently still on track to open the bridge to traffic by the end of June 2015.   As part of this work, the Reed Street intersection is currently under construction, and the Project will repave the northbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp.


Progress on the widening of southbound I-95 continue.  This past month the Project has done a substantial amount of paving for the base layers of the I-95 widening and begun the restoration of the I-95 southbound Exit 15 on ramp from Route 7.  The completion of the Route 7 ramp is still on track for the end of June, and we are targeting July for the opening of the auxiliary lanes of I-95.  The project will continue to utilize regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures on I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 to support the bridge and highway work in the northbound and southbound directions Monday through Friday, 9:00pm till 6:00am.

June 23, 2015 Update


Progress on the widening of southbound I-95 is working towards completion.  This past month the Project has continued the restoration of the Exit 15 on ramp from Route 7 and begun to tie into the existing I-95 southbound pavement.  The Exit 14 ramp to Route 1 will be completed by the end of the week and the completion of the Route 7 ramp will be in approximately 2 weeks.  The project is targeting mid-July for the opening of the southbound auxiliary lanes of I-95.  There will continue to be regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures on I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 to support the bridge and highway work in the northbound and southbound directions Monday through Friday, 9:00pm till 6:00am.


The work on Fairfield Avenue Bridge is almost complete.  The project is currently planting trees and installing safety features such as guiderail and fencing along the bridge.  The work on the approaches is also nearly complete.  To open the bridge,  the project is working to complete the Reed Street intersection and repave the northbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp.  These tasks will take about 2 weeks.  The  bridge will be ready to open when these two items are completed which should be about the 2nd or 3rd  week in July.


On Route 1, work is continuing to install drainage structures and sidewalks.  Work is ongoing at the Exit 14 ramp intersection as well as at the Fairfield Avenue intersections.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the Project on Route 1 weekdays between 9:00am and 3:00pm.  All the various construction operations on Route 1 will continue till the end of the Summer.

June 2, 2015 Update


The southbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp to Route 1 has been completed and the speed change lane is open from the Fairfield Avenue bridge.   The last leg of the speed change lane from the Route 7 ramp will be finished approximately 2 weeks after the barrier installed, the paving is complete, and other safety features are finished.  The project is still targeting mid-July for the full opening of the southbound auxiliary lanes of I-95.  After the Fourth of July holiday weekend (July 3 – July 5), regularly scheduled nighttime lane closures on I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 15 will resume to support the final bridge and highway work in the northbound and southbound directions Monday through Friday, 9:00pm till 6:00am.


Progress continues on the Fairfield Avenue Bridge.  Safety features such as fencing and guiderail continue to be installed on and the project has finished planting trees as well as  seeded the area with new grass.  The paving on  Reed Street intersection the northbound I-95 Exit 14 off ramp is finished and now the guiderail and safety features will be installed along the ramps.  The  bridge will be ready to open when all items are completed, which should still be about the 2nd or 3rd  week in July.


On Route 1, work is continuing to install drainage structures and sidewalks.  The new drainage and sidewalk work from the Exit 14 intersection past Swanky Franks is finished and  the Fairfield Avenue intersection is nearly complete.  As drainage work finishes, the new sidewalks and driveways are installed.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the Project on Route 1 weekdays between 9:00am and 3:00pm.  All the various construction operations on Route 1 will continue till the end of the Summer.

July 17, 2015 Update


The Fairfield Avenue Bridge over I-95 is now open.  Traffic exiting I-95 northbound can now make a left onto Fairfield Avenue to access Route 1, and traffic traveling from South Norwalk on Fairfield Avenue can drive straight though to Route 1 and Clinton Avenue.


The work on the speed change lane from the Route 7 ramp is continuing.   The barrier is complete, and paving has begun.  Once the other safety features are finished the lane will be open.  The opening should take place by the end of July or the first week in August.


On Route 1, work is continuing to install drainage structures and sidewalks near Cedar Street.  As drainage work finishes, the new sidewalks and driveways are installed.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the Project on Route 1 weekdays between 7:00am and 3:00pm.  All the various construction operations on Route 1 will continue till the end of the Summer.

July 23, 2015 Update


The Project will be opening the full length of the additional southbound ‘speed change’ lane on I-95 between the Exit 15 on ramp and the Exit 14 off ramp on Friday July 31, conditions and weather permitting.  The new traffic pattern will provide a full lane for motorist to travel between the Route 7 on ramp at Exit 15 ramp to the Exit 14 off ramp where they can merge on and off the highway on the southbound removing the pre-existing choke point.   These improvements should relieve traffic delays on I-95 traveling through Norwalk.


When the traffic shift takes place on the night of July 30 (weather permitting), motorists should be prepared for delays on I-95 and Route 7 southbound between 9:00 pm and 6:00am while the work is proceeding.

July 31, 2015 Update


The Project has opened the full length of the southbound ‘speed change’ lane on I-95 between the Exit 15 on ramp and the Exit 14 off ramp today.  This new traffic pattern will provide a dedicated lane for motorist to travel between interchanges 14 and 15  to merge onto and off I-95 in a more efficient manor.   The new configuration will benefit motorists by removing the ‘choke point’ that was present between the interchanges prior to the Project, and help relieve congestion in the area.


Please note that construction will continue on this stretch of I-95 through the fall to restore the pavement.


Sept 3, 2015 Update


On Route 1, work is continuing to install drainage structures and sidewalks between the Exit 14 intersection and Glenwood Avenue.  As drainage work finishes, the new sidewalks and driveways are installed.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the Project on Route 1 weekdays between 7:00am and 3:00pm.  All the various construction operations on Route 1 will continue through October.


The Project is substantially complete on I-95 and will be finalizing the work over the next month.


Please note that there is another Contract working on pavement on this stretch of I-95 from Exits 10 to 16.


Oct 5, 2015 Update


On Route 1, work is continuing to install drainage structures and sidewalks between the Taylor Avenue and West Cedar Street.  As drainage work finishes, the new sidewalks and driveways are installed.  Daily lane closures will continue at various locations within the Project on Route 1 weekdays between 7:00am and 3:00pm.  Drainage work on Route 1 should be complete in October.  Restoration of the sidewalk and pavement will take place following the drainage.


Aside from some minor elements, work on I-95 by this Project is complete.



Oct 13, 2015 Update


As part of the ongoing improvement of Route 1 between the I-95 Exit 14 intersection and Fairfield Avenue in Norwalk, the project will be milling and resurfacing the roadway beginning the week of October 19.  This work will be done in sections and will take about 2 weeks, weather permitting.  Rotating lane closures in both directions should be expected throughout this portion of the construction.  Motorists should be aware when driving through the area and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.

November 18, 2015 Update


Work on the project’s drainage is complete and the final stage of the Project is to repave Route 1.  The Exit 14 intersection and Fairfield Intersections on Route 1 are complete and striped with dedicated left hand turn lanes matched to the new traffic signals.  But  due to the colder temperatures that affect the asphalt, and it time it takes to prepare the utilities for paving, the work at the Cedar Street and Taylor Avenue intersection will be completed the Spring of 2016.   


Work on the Project over the next couple of weeks will address whatever can be completed before change in seasons and be sure Route 1 is ready for the winter. 



December 9, 2015 Update


The Exit 14 intersection and Fairfield Intersections on Route 1 are complete and Cedar Street and Taylor Avenue intersection construction zone have been paved.   The entire project has been striped into its final configuration with dedicated left turn lanes at each of the Route 1 intersections which will ease the traffic for turning traffic.

 

Work on the Project over the next couple of weeks will address whatever can be completed before change in seasons and have Route 1 ready for the winter.  There is no scheduled work over the holidays.



March  7, 2016 Update


Work will begin this week to install a safety fence along the northbound shoulder of I-95 near Cedar Street.  This operation will take approximately 6 weeks.  The work will not affect the travel lanes on I-95 during the day, but there could be lane closures that will take place at night as needed.


As the weather gets warmer, work will resume on Route 1 in preparation for the final paving of the Taylor Avenue and Cedar Street intersections.  The paving will begin in April or when there are regular forecasts for warm, dry weather.

May  9, 2016 Update


Work is continuing to install a safety fence along the northbound shoulder of I-95 near Cedar Street.  This operation will Continue into June.  The work will not affect the travel lanes on I-95 during the day, but there could be lane closures that will take place at night as needed.


Work has resumed on Route 1 in preparation for the final paving of the Taylor Avenue and Cedar Street intersections.  The milling and paving will begin May 9th.  It is expected to take 2 weeks, weather permitting.
